One of the biggest takeaways from my high school education at my small boarding school in Colorado is metalsmithing. Metalsmithing is the combined art of fire and material science, it was a playground to set free my imagination and do hands-on individual projects. I was introduced to a variety of advanced metalsmithing techniques like patinas, pick soldering, casting, etc. It requires patience, precision, and problem-solving skills.
By working hands-on with different metallic materials such as silver, brass, bronze, and steel; I gained a deep understanding of material properties at an early stage, and I was able to transfer my hands-on experience to my material science class at university. In addition, because of the foundation of pick-soldering, I was able to transfer my skill to PCB soldering that I used to make various projects including the internet access surveillance camera.
